Borrego Desert (truckhaven hills / mud hills) - Review |
| |
Location:
North/Northeast of Big Bear Lake
|
Difficult
Rating: From Easy to Most Difficult.
Various mud hills featuring many switchbacks, steep
dropoffs, off camber hills, and lots of sand.
Many stock vehicles will have a blast as well as the
most tricked out rig.
|
Features:
Covering over 600,000 acres, Anza Borrego State Parkis
one of the largest state parks in North America.
This write up will only cover the northern section of
the park. The moonscape terrain is enormously
popular with not only Jeep enthusiast but ATV,
dirtbike, and various SUV owners as well. Those
looking for the ultimate challenge can test there
suspension and lockers at nearby Truckhaven hills,
home to the Tierra Del Sol Desert Safari each
year. Perhaps the largest 4 wheeling event in
the world. Some of the most enjoyable trails
found right in the area are Truckhaven hills, Lower
Coyote Canyon, Calcite Mine, The Slot, Pumpkin Patch,
Ocotillo Wells, Pinyon Mountain (featuring the squeeze
and heartattack hill), Sandstone Canyon, Diablo
Dropoff, Los Pinos Lookout, and more!

Time
and Distance: Depends on the trail.
Bring a GPS especially if your out there after dark...
It can take a long time to find camp again if you get
turned around. This area is the best for a 3-4
day adventure.
|
To
Get There: Just North of Borrego Springs the
town, from intersection of DeGiorgio R. and Henderson
Canyon Rd., go north 1.7 miles to park boundry.
Here you find Lower Coyote Canyone trail. Or
take the S22 towards the Salton Sea. Turn off to
the right or left and various trails and washes.
There are too many trails to list here. Pick up
a map from the ranger station. The best 5 bucks
you can spend!
