| Holcomb
(Deep) Creek Trail - Review |
| |
Location:
Northwest of Big Bear Lake between Green Valley and
Fawnskin
|
Difficult
Rating: Difficult. No single obstacle
stands out in this trail; it's just one challenging
boulder field after another. Narrow and tippy in
places. Wet tires add to the difficulty as the
trail crosses tributaries to Holcomb Creek. You
can also increase the diffculty by choosing a more
aggressive line through the boulders. This trail
is not recommended for stock SUVs. Lockers, high
ground clearance and undercarriage protection
recommended.
|
Features:
An interesting hardcore trail that winds along Holcomb
Creek. The Rock Garden begins the trail and sets
the stage for what's ahead. You can explore a
difficult side trail through Lower Largo Flats (F.S.
2N06X).
|
Time
and Distance: Just under 6 miles.
Allow 2 to 3 hours depending upon size of group and
capability of vehicles. Add more time for 2N06X.
|
To
Get There: Go north on Green Valley Lake
Road from highway 18 just northeast of Arrowhead Lake
near mile marker 34.5. Green Valley Lake Road is
marked with a small street sign and is easy to
miss. After 2.6 miles, turn left on wide dirt
road F.S. 3N16. Follow signs to Crab Flats
Campground. After a couple of miles, you'll go
by a small staging area for 2N12X, a green sticker
trail. Ignore lesser side roads that branch
off. The road to Crab Flats Campground goes left
soon after the paved section begins. This also
takes you to Dishpan Springs Trail. To reach
Holcomb Creek, bear right and go another 2.8
miles. Look for small signs on the right along a
paved section when it turns sharply left.
|
Return
Trip: Right on 3N14 goes downhill to
Fawnskin on highway 38 along the north rim of Big Bear
Lake. As you go downhill, watch for 2N13 which
goes right to Butler Peak. Left on 3N14 goes
uphill to major Forest Road 3n16. If you turn
right on 3N16 it will eventually take you to the John
Bull Trail. When you finish Holcomb Creek, turn
left on 3N14. Go uphill less than a tenth of a
mile and turn right on a smaller road. Although
sings are confusing, this is F.S. 3N08. Reset
your odometer. Continue straight at .4 miles
when a road joins on the right. You can see
Holcomb Creek below in the right at 3.7 miles.
At first, you may not notice the road that goes
left. Go straight at 3.8 miles as a road joins
on the right. Drop down into a steep gully and
climb out the other side. To your left is a
large rock wall of a strip mine. You reach F.S.
3N16 at 4.6 miles. Turn right and go east 5.5
miles to reach John Bull Trail.
