| Lockwood
Creek / Miller Jeep Trail - Review |
| |
Location:
Southwest of Frazier Park, west of Hungry Valley OHV
area.
|
Difficult
Rating: Difficult. Very hilly, steep
and rocky. Not recommended for stock SUVs.
Tough section at beginning of trail is fairly typical
of conditions along the route. Last few miles of
Miller Jeep Trail are toughest part of trip.
Lockers and oversized tires recommended. Don't
drive alone!
|
Features:
Very convenient to Los Angeles. One of few
remaining hardcore trails in this part of
California. Campgrounds along trail offer no
amenities; however those in Hungry Valley OHV area
include ramadas and picnic tables. Descent from
Alamo Mountain is very scenic. Route is open to
ATVs and dirt bikes. Stay on designated route at
all times.
|
Time
and Distance: Difficult portion of route is
12 miles long and takes 4 to 5 hours assuming no
problems (but usually there is at least one).
Add another 15 miles of easy road to descend Alamo
Mountain. Allow a full day for the entire trip.
|
To
Get There: Exit Interstate 5 at Frazier Park
exit. Head west on Frazier Park Mountain Road
approximately 7 miles to Lake of the Woods. Turn
left on Lockwood Valley road and go about 5
miles. Bear left when the road forks at a sign
for Lockwood Creek Camground (Road 8N12). Reset
odometer. Follow a well-defined graded road,
ignoring smaller side roads. Bear right at 1.3
miles. At 2.2 miles, bear right into a cabled
off open area. Head southwest to an opening on
the other side. A sign identifies the start of
Lockwood Creek Trail as route #127. A larger
sign points out that this is adopted by the Point Magu
4wd Club.
|
Return
Trip: Follow Alamo Mountain Loop Road 2.6
miles and turn sharp left downhill. The road
becomes paved about half way down. it switches
back and crosses over a concrete water crossing.
At this point the road becomes Gold Hill Road.
Go another 15 miles to come the the intersection of
Gold Hill and Hungry Valley Roads. Right is the
shortest way back to I5.
